Since its introduction in 1981, the PC has seen many changes, and an enormous number of companies worldwide now manufacture or market hardware, software, and peripheral devices for IBM-compatible computers. IBM also has a huge research effort, owns thousands of patents, and has introduced many innovative products, including the small, touch-sensitive TrackPoint, which replaces the mouse on many portable computers, a 1000MHz chip, and a 3.5-inch hard disk drive capable of storing up to 17GB of information.
